Can't change measure width in continuous view

• Nov 25, 2018 - 15:07

I have a measure with minimal activity (whole notes, half notes) and the default width for the measure not huge, which makes sense. However, underneath I have complex dynamics (forte, sub. mezzo-forte, cresc.) that must be underneath the measure with the whole note. So, I'd like to expand the width of that measure.

In continuous view it seems impossible to move the bar. In page view, it can be done with Shift + }.

So far I have tried:
-adjusting first in page view --didn't carry over.
-playing around with "Measure Properties" that appears on right click -- no change.

Does anyone know of a way to do it?

Continuous view doesn't need the width changed. MuseScore has a minimum width that can be set in Stye->General...->Measure, but otherwise it automatically makes it wider to allow space for notes entered into the score. Few manual changes are seen in continuous view, since you cannot *print this view. The changes can be seen in page view.

*If you attempt to print this view, MuseScore switches the printed view to page view.

When adding dynamics which need accurate placing, I sometimes create a hidden Voice 2 in the measure. If you then split the Voice 2 whole-measure rest into many rests of a smaller duration, this may give you the space you need.

I use the same trick in page view because these adjustments usually don't look the same, and often become unnecessary when done in continuous view then switch to page view.

I do remember someone used continuous view for karaoke playback. This type of situation is the only one I can see using the fake 2nd voice in continuous view. This is actually a misuse of Musescore. Not that I object to it, but if you are going to misuse the program, you need to be prepared to need some workarounds to make it work.
