How do I decrease the distance between systems in order to force an additional system onto a page?

In particular, reducing the "Minimum system distance" would potentially allow more systems to fit. However, you might find the results too crowded - the default is already pretty low. It might be preferable to simply reduce the overall size of everything, by reducing the staff size / scaling in Layout / Page Settings. Or perhaps some combination of these.

Can you tell me why the following pages are different from the ones where there are 2 systems on the page?

Because each element, to avoid collisions, requires some space, such as lyrics (on two lines). You can try Format/Page Settings->Scaling

Thanks, Shoichi! I actually did a bit of scaling (tiny bit less than yours and then fudged system spacing again and got almost the same result as yours but that's okay. I was still curious as to why those particular measures needed the space when one of the other measures (with same lyrics and melodies) did not.

Scratch that question - I see now that I had double lyrics in page 2 and only single lyrics in the other one!
