Playback Stuttering and Note Duration Issues in Seemingly Uncorrupted Large Score

• Dec 5, 2018 - 00:18

Hi everyone, I hope all your music making is going well. There is a lot for me to cover, so I'll get started right away.

I am working on a large score for a jazz composition competition, that has some intricate parts, time changes, soundfonts, etc. I created a separate score for a playback so my jazz ensemble would have a more accurate representation of what they had to imitate as the piece is slightly confusing. Around a week ago when adding a cymbal roll on the drum part, some playback issues started arising in my score. More specifically, in seemingly random measures (not correlating with the number of instruments playing, tempo, time signature, etc) the playback began to stutter and stretch certain measures and notes.

I have tried a number of different methods to try and resolve the issue. I first did research here on similar problems. I did indeed find an article (https://musescore.org/en/node/52451) that I believed described the issue I have; however, their solutions did not work for me. My computer and CPU should be able to handle the load. It is an iMac from 2013: 8GB of RAM and a 2.5 GHz Intel processor. I don't usually have lag issues unless I am heavily multitasking with programs. Here are the steps that I followed to try and fix the issue. All of the following did not work

  1. Restarted MuseScore
  2. Restarted Computer
  3. Removed All Soundfonts except MuseScore Default
  4. Reinstalled Default Soundfont
  5. Reset MuseScore factory settings
  6. Reinstalled MuseScore
  7. Ensured RAM and CPU on Computer was not Overloaded
  8. Made a copy of the Score
  9. Deleted Certain Instruments (drums, rhythm section, trombones, etc.)
  10. Copy and pasted score to another score
  11. Deleted all measures and copied original score and edited again to reach similarity to playback score
  12. Installed MuseScore 3 Beta (It kept crashing I was not even able to open any score)
  13. Reinstalled audio drivers on Mac

Again, none of the above methods worked to fix the stuttering problem. MuseScore does not detect the score to be corrupted, and copying to a fresh score still does not work. Eventually in the post I found, the problem was fixed in a new build of MuseScore which would be slightly inconvenient, but luckily I have an earlier recording from MuseScore that can serve as a back up if push comes to shove.

I attached a sample that I copied and pasted to a new score that still stutters along with an .mp3. In the forum that I looked at before, some computers were able to imitate the stutter while others were not.

I want to say thanks in advance for any help this has been extremely frustrating, but this MuseScore community is one of the most caring and helpful I have ever come across so I do not think I need to be that worried.

Thanks Again,

Skunk Master Funk

You've added a whole bunch of "fade in" articulation markings, not sure why - maybe you meant accent marks, or crescendos? Anyhow, if you check the Inspector, you see some or maybe all of these are set to a "time stretch" of 2.0 for some reason. Right click one, select all similar, and reset them to the default in the Inspector - or better yet, delete them and add the marking you really meant (I'm guessing accent).

I think that was it. That was just a small example in my score, I do mean for the articulation markings to be fade in for that part. When editing fermatas for the piece I must have selected all of my articulation markings and set them to a time stretch of 2.

Wow. So much hype for a problem so simple. Thank you so much, Marc.
