Sorting Soundfonts

• Dec 19, 2018 - 18:44

When I want to choose an instrument sound I go to "mixer" where I can choose from many instruments. Once there, it looks pretty random. Is there a way to sort the soundfonts? They show up in the dropdown box in random order, where I can't find something alphabetically or tell what source the file is from.

Tedious, not random...

I now have 4 fonts in my synth. The instruments are listed in the order of each font. I recognize them.

Example: Font A - list them in a standard order beginning with Grand Piano. When it ends, Font B begins, with this one listed in order of the instruments on a symphonic score, omitting all the midi sounds included in others (whistles, clap, gunshot etc)
Then font C, etc.

While it can be tedious at times, I do recognize where one font begins and one ends. Also , the names are different on some which helps with recognition.

You can change the order of the fonts in the synthesizer (careful, though. I've noticed a change of order will cause a blink, sometimes a crash.)
As far as I know, you cannot change the order of the instruments in each font.

I am referring to my 2.3.2. I do not know what is in store for ver 3 as far as the synth, etc.

Hope this helps.

For the record, the order isn't random - it's the order defined by the soudnfont itself, which for the defualt and msot others you might be using is defined by the long-standard "General MIDI" standard. And thus it's the same for virtually every MIDI-based application and device in the world, which is a good thing. If you have multiple soundfonts loaded (not common, not sure if you are saying you do), then they show up each in order. A better way of marking the dividing line between one soundfont one the next, or grouping similar instruments from different soundfonts, would indeed be nice, and there has been work done on this. Not sure of the status.
