MuseScore 3 - editing instruments.xml

• Jan 17, 2019 - 02:30

I've installed MuseScore 3 and editing the "instruments.xml" doesn't seem to affect on the software. I've been adding custom instruments and genres in MS2. I first tried to copy and paste the file from ver. 2 to ver. 3's instruments folder, but it didn't work. Then I manually edited the file and still didn't add the new instruments and genres.
You can see on the files attached, MS2 file is working on it's version, but both files won't work on MS3. The changes I've made were adding the genre "Tuna" to some instruments (i.e.: Violin, Flute, Tenor, Mandolin, Alto...) and a new instrument called "Cavaquinho Português".
Any help on this? So far I can't use the 3.0 version because I can't complete some works without that instrument.

Same as in 2.x: the instruments.xml you see is just a copy of a builtin file ":/data/instruments.xml"
To use it you need to specify your modified one in preferences instead of or, better, in addition to that

No idea what a Genre of Tuna means, but that additional instrument might better get added to intruments.xml permanantly for the version, please open an issue for that in the issue tracker, best with the snippet of the xml that added it

Forgot that I had to update on Musescore's preferences! Thanks, it's solved.

And for curiosity:
Tuna is a Folk music group of academic students. Their origins and most active locations are in Portugal and Spain.

The Portuguese Cavaquinho I've added, in fact has a GGBD tuning. I've always seen that tuning here in Portugal. Never saw a CGBD one, so far. As the neck, the ones we play in our Tuna has only have 12 but there are ones with 13, so I've added those. You can see one in the image in the link:

I still have to add the portuguese guitars instruments/tuning to the instruments.

Thank you once again.

As per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavaquinho the plain Cavaquinho is identical to Cavaquinho Português, the former exists in instruments.xml already
Your's seems to have a different tuning, (GGBD vs. CGBD, the common Brazlian tuning or CGAD, the common Portoguese tuning) and a shorter neck (13 vs. 19, we may well have gotten this wrong in MuseScore, but better to erro on the the side of too many) and steel sting sound rather than nylon string sound (which both seem possble, but can also be achieved via the mixer))

I don't think we should include every possible tuning in the instruments.xml, but indeed rather leave this to the users' own one.

So better create your own instrument.xml that only contains your additions and changes, and load that as the 2nd one in preferences rather than replacing the first, which is asking for trouble on every update.
Or use a template file.
