Triplets and Straight Notes in one bar
Just doing some general notation stuff for drumming and was wondering how I can, for example, have the bass drum playing triplets on top of the cymbals and snare playing straight quarter notes... anyone able to help?

You have to use different voices to get that.
Let's say... Voice number 1 to the cymbals straight quarter notes, voice 2 to the snare notes, and voice number 3 to the bass drum triplets notes.
Whatever, I prefer to put each percussion instrument in separate staves.
See both examples at the attached files. The standard *.mscz file is made with MuseScore 3.0.1 version which is not compatible with old versions format. That's the reason I downloaded a *.musicxml file.
