Go to Start or End of score

• Feb 3, 2019 - 14:04

In version 2, I could use Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End to go to the start or end of the score (i.e. Preferences/ShortCuts/"Go to the first element" and /"Go to the last element" respectively). In version 3 (3.0.2.5315, Windows 10 64bit) these keys no longer work. The cursor just jumps to the start or end of the current system, which is not much use because that's possible with a click of the mouse or a few arrow keystrokes. Is this a bug or a deliberate change?

There's a Rewind button on the toolbar and on the Play panel, which will do for the while. But there isn't a corresponding keystroke option, and I can't find anything for "Jump to end" which is essential when editing a score.

Note: my keyboard doesn't have separate Home and End keys, only on the numeric pad.

Hi Vic,
Use the "NumLock" key to lock the numbers then you can use the "7" for "Home" and the "1" for "End"

Thanks, Hans. To my surprise that works!

Still, I wish they hadn't changed change the behaviour of Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End (without Numlock). I suppose I can just about remember to turn NumLock on when using MuseScore. I'll admit I've hated NumLock ever since Windows 3.1, when it was on by default. It was never any use except to cause typing errors.

The real problem is I have to remember to turn it off again whenever I switch to a different program, which I do frequently! Unfortunately there isn't a little light to indicate whether Numlock is on or off, although I found a little program (called TrayStatus) to show an indicator in the TaskBar, which is better than nothing.

By the way, I migrated to MuseScore2 about a year ago after a couple of decades of using a now desperately outdated program called MusicTime. I'm finding a lot to like about MuseScore3, in particular the quick startup, but inevitably loads of little things I'd like to change!

all the best, Vic

Thanks for those links, Jojo. It's clear Home/Ctrl-Home and End/Ctrl-End have been in chaos for some time now! I always thought Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End meant going to the start or end of the document as standard in Windows (maybe it was WordPerfect, remember that?) but it now seems that every program has its own view about it. Anyway, the shortcuts I defined on that basis seemed to work fine in the last version of MuseScore2, but not in MuseScore3.

Mike's suggestion succeeds in bringing the start or end into view, but you still have to click on a note or other item there to be sure of staying there.

I hadn't tried the Navigator before, but I now find it useful for getting to the start or end, with the minor drawback that it consumes a bit of score working space. But it's a useful alternative to the NumLock business.
