MuseScore not working at all

• Jul 26, 2014 - 15:31

Hi, I'm trying to transpose some music, and I'm almost done, but what this program is doing is quite pissing me off. I'll open it, open my music, and try to change the key signature, put in notes, changes note values and it does nothing. At all. It doesn't even let me go to the menu bar at the top. Sometimes can't even exit out of the program. I have to crtl alt delete it. please help me before I throw my computer out of my third story window. Thank you.

Have you tried a factory reset?

http://musescore.org/en/handbook/revert-factory-settings

If that doesn't work try opening up the shortcut properties and select "Run as administrator" in the Compatibility tab then click OK.

Another possibility could be the MuseScore connect panel causing problems - if you are not connected to the internet and have this open it has been known to freeze the whole machine.

Try these first and then come back if you've still got problems

You tried the "first suggestion" meaning the Revert to factory settings ?

Sounds like maybe some sort of modal dialog is trying to display but you aren't seeing it for some reason.

Can you post a screenshot of the full desktop, what you see after double-clicking the MuseScore icon (or however you start MuseScore) and then doing whatever you need to do from there until it freezes?

Also post the *exact* series of steps you are following from the moment you open the program to the moment it locks up.

Please be more specific. After you open MuseScore, and open your file, tell us exactly what you are pressing/clicking and in what order. For instance, you say you tried adding a whole note - so I assume you started by clicking an empty measure in 4/4 time, pressing N to enter note entry mode, then selecting the whole note from the palette, then typing the name of the note? If not, what did you do that was different from that?

Also post the score you having difficulty with, and say exactly which empty measure you are are trying to add the whole note to.

It seems likely it is simply something you are misunderstanding about how it supposed to work, but I can't tell what exactly you are doing wrong without more information.

...'Dogs_of_War.mscz' seems fine to me, too. (MuseScore 1.3, Windows XP sp3)
I was able to add whole notes (or any other note duration).

Questions:
1. You created the score from scratch and were able to enter and edit notes right up until you reached measure 38?
2. When you open MuseScore, then load your file (and before you try adding/editing any notes), can you at least play back what is already displayed?
3. You did a factory reset. Have you tried uninstall/reinstall the program?

Also, in menu item: Edit / Preferences... uncheck the 'Show MuseScore Connect' box.
Restart MuseScore and see if you can work with Shoichi's 'Dogs of War B.mscz' attachment.

Regards.

For example, when you wrote:
'I could do a little more...' ? - What exactly could you do?

'...disabled that thing...' - you mean MuseScore Connect?

'...when I try to enter a note...' - Need the *exact* steps you perform.

Something like this:
1. Open Musescore with MuseScore connect disabled
2. Load Shoichi's 'Dogs of War B.mscz'
3. Mouse click on the whole rest in measure #29 of the upper staff. (The whole rest turns blue.)
4. Press 'N' for note entry.
5. Press '7' to select whole note duration
6. Press a letter (eg. 'A') to enter the note

Regards.
