Deleting Time Signature

When I write music in a time signature like 9/16 and beam the sixteenth notes as triplets (three at a time) using Time Signature Properties everything works properly as expected. My problem is that if I delete the time signature to make more room the sixteenth notes change their beaming to quadruplets automatically which totally messes every thing up. Is there some way just to delete the time signature without the score defaulting to some version of 4/4 time? I realize it is possible to make the time signature invisible, but that doesn't give more room for the notes by shifting them to the left.
