MIDI keyboard step time note input builds chords rather than tunes
Using the mouse or QWERTY keyboard step time note input moves forward one note at a time (as demonstrated in tutorials)
However using the on screen keyboard or attached MIDI keyboard the note input builds chords at the position of last note.
I cannot find how to change note input to "melody input mode"

Thanks for the guidance, issue is not resolved. Musescore continues to be stuck in "build chord" mode.
As I said QWERTY keyboard note input works as documented but soon as I touch the MIDI keyboard it starts adding harmony notes.
The real-time and step-time inputs are also malfunctioning.

Dispels the doubt that they are MIDI keyboard settings (MIDI output setings in Preferences > I/O).
I can't suggest anything else :(

It sounds like your midi device is not sending a note off signal to MuseScore. I know almost nothing else about midi keyboards.

thanks - I have the user manual for Technics sx-P50 digital piano.
Not a great document but does offer some clues.

Bought a second midi controller keyboard (used from gumtree - very cheap) and Musescore worked as expected, briefly.
Conclusion - it is my cheap USB midi interface cable that is the issue. Found advice warning against using these on Technics Keyboard forum.
Recommended to use Roland UM-ONE mk2 USB MIDI Interface - ordered and will update if it works.
