note length
Whatever length of note I highlight, when I input it at the beginning of the bar it always writes as a crotchet, even if I want minim, semibreve or whatever! Arghhhh!

Hello, are you in noteinput-mode (shortcut "N")? After that select the duration.
To be clear: always enter note input mode then select the duration. Clicking a duration button while not in note input mode does something else entirely (changes the duration of a selected note or rest)
