Measure context menu non-intuitive compared to note and rest context menus
This is the current (3.2.3) context menu when selecting a measure:
- Staff
- Edit Drumset…
- Piano Roll Editor...
- Staff/Part Properties…
- Split Staff…
- Measure
- Cut
- Copy
- Paste
- Swap with Clipboard
- Delete
- Add -> ….
- Remove Selected Measures
- Measure Properties...
I consider the above menu structure non-intuitive, since
- some of the entries below Measure act on the Measure Contents, not the Measure itself. The biggest “victim” is Delete, which does not delete the Measure but its contents.
- Staff/Part Properties is at the top. The entries that apply to Measure only (and not Measure Contents) are at the bottom, even though you selected a measure object.
We already have a separation between measure and note/rest element when selecting an individual note or rest, e.g. for the Note context menu:
- Staff
- Staff/Part Properties…
- Measure
- Measure Properties...
- Note
- Cut
- Copy
- Paste
- Swap with Clipboard
- Delete
- Select ->
- Edit Element
- Help
Only major issue here is that the selected element entry is at the bottom, with Staff/Part Properties and Measure being at the top.
My proposed change for the measure context menu
- New top-level context menu entry for Measure Contents
- Put Measure sub-entries at the top. You are selecting Measure and want to see its options first, not Measure Contents or Staff.
- 2nd level entries are reorganised according to whether they apply Measure or Measure Contents
- Add missing “Help” entry
which gets us to:
- Measure
- Add -> …
- Remove
- Properties
- Help
- Measure Contents
- Cut
- Copy
- Paste
- Swap with Clipboard
- Delete
- Staff
- Edit Drumset…
- Piano Roll Editor…
- Staff/Part Properties…
- Split Staff…
A revised note/rest context menu (which puts the element that was selected at the top, not the bottom):
- Note
- Cut
- Copy
- Paste
- Swap with Clipboard
- Delete
- Select ->
- Edit Element
- Help
- Measure
- Measure Properties...
- Staff
- Staff/Part Properties…
