Numbering measures e.g. 17a and 17b
I'm trying to format measure numbers so that in a first ending, they appear as 17a, 18a, 19a etc., while in the second ending they appear as 17b, 18b, 19b etc. How can I do this?

You can't. You could use rehearsl marks instead
As Jojo says, use Rehearsal marks:
In the 1st ending, Right-click >BarProperties > tick “Exclude from bar count”
[Ctrl] M to add Rehearsal Mark(s) wherever you want
Use the Inspector to change te Rehearsal Marks appearance to “Bar number”
Adjust the offset (e.g. X 0.50, Y -1.5
