mute a particular instrument
If I have a four bar score, can I have only one of the bars playback and mute the others?

Via Mixer (Solo or Mute button) https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/mixer
You would need to select the measures you want to mute, open the inspector (press F8), click the notes button to limit the selection to only notes, then remove the check from play so these notes will be silenced. Unmuting them is the same process except you check play.
