Can't get a tie to work as intended

In the top line, fourth measure, I want a tie over the G rising to the A so that the word "be" is sung over both notes. However, when I select those two notes and click on the tie button, the software installs a tie over the entire phrase instead of just the two intended notes. There must be a fix for that. Thanks.
