Using midi keyboard/piano

• Dec 5, 2019 - 15:38

Please can you advise me if it is possible, having connected a keyboard/piano to the computer, to play a piano piece which will show the notation on he screen as played? Thank you.

I know of no software that can do that in real time, and even software that attempts to do it in batch-mode is state-of-the-art bleeding-edge. How is it possible to know what length of note to notate if you haven't finished playing it yet?

The number of complications making this not feasible is enormous - how would the software know which notes are played in which hand? How would it know when to use multiple voices versus combining rhythms into a single voice? How would it handle places where you aren't keeping time very well?

So, no. It's an interesting AI problem, but technology is a very long way from being able to create readable sheet music from a realtime performance of anything but the most trivially simple examples like melodies played in one hand only. Those do work, though, see the Handbook for more information on the realtime input modes. They typically aren't more efficient than just entering the notes normally though.
