Note heads for Tab

Ive used a number of X symbol to try to change the numbers on the tab into Xs, but none of them actually replace the number. They just end up behind it. Some other note heads that ill end up writing on the regular notes cant be done with the tab numbers either. Is there a way to change the numbers in the tab into another symbol i.e. X, slashes etc.
