Guitar Pick Direction - keyboard shortcut and score placement?

• Dec 31, 2019 - 00:18

Hi.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to adding guitar pick direction to scores? I found the "up bow" and "down bow" symbols in the articulations palette but would like to know a keyboard shortcut to enter them.

Another question is the "bows" appear both over the guitar tab and above the treble clef staff. Is it possible to control where the bows appear? I would prefer they show beneath the guitar tab only, not above it.

Thanks,

Howard

Indeed, there are ready-made shortcuts in Edit / Preferences / Shortcuts. Looking for "Toggle up bow", and "Toggle down bow". It's up to you to define them to your liking.

Then, for placement. Indeed, this is one, sometimes, of the undesirable effects of linked staves. Bows, for example, are displayed in both staves. Usually, once the bows are entered, you can hide them (right-click/ selection/all elements in the same staff, so standard staff here) with the "V" key.

Then, you make the same selection again, but in the TAB staff, and there, you use the "X" key to toggle them under the staff.

To avoid this kind of manipulations (fast, though), you must work with non linked staves, simply added so. You just have to enter a first bow (in TAB staff), toggle it below the staff ("X") and, in the Inspector, click on "S".

From then on, all other bows will be displayed below the staff as they are entered .

Many thanks for your reply to my question! Greatly appreciate you taking the time to help.

I haven't figured out the keyboard shortcut yet but understand what you are suggesting. Is there a common keyboard shortcut used for the up and down bows to indicate pick direction?

Was able to figure out getting the up and down bows to appear below the guitar tablature from your reply! If I click on a bow in the tablature, I can change the "Anchor" in the element from Above Staff to Below Staff. This changes that one bow. Need to figure out a way to make this "automatic" so that anytime I enter a Up or Down Bow it appears below the tablature (personal preference) so I don't have to keep selecting and changing them when I enter them. Am new to MuseScore and just not sure how to customize this but will continue to investigate to try and resolve for myself.

Still haven't figure out the Up, Down Bows appearing in the linked piano staff above the tablature. Would prefer they not show at all. I can select them as you suggest and disable "Visible" in the Element panel but they still appear on my score/computer screen but they appear hidden. Not sure if am saying this correctly. They are hidden but visible to me on the computer. I would prefer they were not there at all. Just want the bows/pick notation to appear below the guitar tablature.

What an awesome program! Thanks again for your help, - Howard

"I haven't figured out the keyboard shortcut yet but understand what you are suggesting"

As said, you have to define yourself the wished shortcut of "Toggle Up Bow" and "Toggle Down Bow" in Edit/Preferences/Shortcuts, see: https://musescore.org/fr/node/278648#shortcuts

Eg, I tried Alt + D (down) and Alt + U (up), it worked fine.
NB: you can copy-paste these symbols. So, it's easy to copy one (Ctrl + C) then navigate in your score with right arrow, and do Ctrl + V as many times as necessary.

"They are hidden but visible to me on the computer. I would prefer they were not there at all. Just want the bows/pick notation to appear below the guitar tablature."

They are greyed-out, but they won't print. It's only on your screen (you can complete in menu "View" -> untick "Show invisible")
