Rests

When I start up musescore3 it starts with loads of rests which makes my piece go slower than it should. How do I change this?

MuseScore doesn't start up with "loads of rests" by itself. Something it does do is keep measures complete, meaning that if you haven't put in music it'll show the symbol meaning "no music", which is a rest.

Why do you think rests would make your piece go slower than it should?

As noted, the rests that are present in the default score (or any newly-created score) are just there to fill the measure to proper number of beats. They don't make anything go slower; they go away as soon as you replace them notes. Somehow I think you are confused about what is going on, but in order for us to understand the source of your confusion and assist better, we'd need you to attach your score and explains which rests you are concerned with.
