i can get the letters for the notes in plugins, but they seem to go on top of the notes, how do i sort this to put the letters above the notes

Right click, select all similars->set via Inspector
If you're wondering about the notenames plugin that comes with musescore in combination with 3.4(.1), then you can get the updated version of the plugin from https://raw.githubusercontent.com/musescore/MuseScore/7f8d1dc1d25a366cb… which will be included in the soon coming 3.4.2 release as well.
