How do I enter a note or chord with stems down when program puts them up by default?

How do I enter a note or chord with stems down when program puts them up by default?

After you enter the note, select the notehead, then go to the Inspector (View | Inspector or F8) and set the Stem direction to Auto, or use the keyboard shortcut X.
If you're working with a chord, you need to do this with only one of the notes and the others will follow.
