White Noise.

I was doing a transcription of Teen Town by Weather Report. I was going back and forth between listening to the Youtube video of the recording and doing the parts by ear on MuseScore, when suddenly, after about 20 minutes of having Musescore up and running, a terrible white noise came screeching loudly out of the speakers whenever I played audio.

And no, I don't just mean whenever I played audio from MuseScore, I mean whenever I played audio from other things as well. The Youtube video did the same thing, as did Spotify, as did my email notifications. Every sound coming out of the laptop was masked by a horrendous wave of white noise.

This has happened before and despite the updates it keeps happening. The only way I can get it to stop is by restarting my laptop. As of the time I'm posting this, my MuseScore is fully updated. I'm running Windows 10 on a Microsoft Surface laptop, first generation. This also doesn't happen with DAW software like FL Studio or Ableton, both of which I use with no issues similar to this.

This is so, so annoying. Please help!

If the sound you hear is truly screeching, my guess is that it is not white noise. This is feed back. Try turning off your microphone.

Got it. I only thought of feedback because you used the word "screeching". Another idea is to make sure your audio drivers are up to date. Do this from the Surface website. On rare occasion, I been able to clear up a driver issue by having Device Manager totally delete the driver and then it will download the the driver again.
