Grayed-out "Export Parts" option

I am trying to enter some public domain sonatas with basso continuo for the purpose of generating parts to play from. I have successfully done this for five pieces. I entered a sixth and the "File > Export Parts" option is grayed out. I suspect that I have unknowingly done something stupid. Can anyone tell me what I should to to restore that option?
