Using Musescore 3

Why, when I try to use Musescore 3 on my iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017) running macOS Catalina, Version 10.15.4, do I keep getting a message: [“Musescore 3” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software
This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

Has anyone else run into this? How did you solve it?
(I tried emailing Musescore help -- no phone contact possible, naturally -- and had no reply.)
