Drop 2 voicings - selecting second note in multiple chords

• May 4, 2020 - 14:03

How do I select the second highest note in all chords in a staff? The "select" function doesn't seem to have the ability to select all second highest notes. I don't really want to have to do "Explode" then "Implode" every time.
Many thanks
Bob

Thank you for your reply. I don't want to prune the notes, just select the second note in a long line of chords. I can then hopefully transpose them down an octave as is common in jazz arranging. I'm not sure if the pivot chord link was the one you meant to post.

I don't understand " I don't really want to have to do "Explode" then "Implode" every time." why "every time" ?? it seems to me that explode is the best tool for this and very fast

I agree with you and don't know why the OP doesn't want to use the tool that would make this a very easy job:

  1. Add two more staves just below the current one
  2. Select all three staves
  3. Explode
  4. Select all of the 2nd staff
  5. Ctrl-down
  6. Select all three staves
  7. implode
  8. Select top staff
  9. implode
  10. remove the 2 additional staves again

I think the only other way for the OP to get what (s)he wants is to write their own plugin for doing chord inversions

Thank you for your speedy reply. In Sibelius this is one click Select Filter > 2nd note. So I understand there is NO WAY to easily select the second, third or fourth note of multiple chords.

What the OP really wants is a plugin like the one Bob Zawalich wrote for Sibelius for doing jazz voicings! e.g. drop 2, drop 4, drop 2 & 4, double lead an octave up /down, and lots of other combinations that are frequently used in jazz arranging. Please don't think this is criticism of Musescore. I am really very impressed with it and indeed it does some things better than my Sibelius, that's why I'm learning Musescore!

I get the desire to easily create drop 2 voicings, and I do support thew idea of adding a way to select by position in chord (this has been proposed multiple times).

But, I'm not really understanding the aversion to explode, or the relevance of implode. The usual use case for drop two voicings in this way would be in writing for instrumental sections, so it's really just explode - no implode. Explode, then some sort of copy/paste operation to reorder the parts. If you're writing for piano, it's going to be tricky no matter what because the note could be on either staff. I guess writing for guitar you'd need to implode again?

Meanwhile, though, it does seem a dedicated drop 2 plugin would be useful and probably not hard to write for anyone who knows the framework.
