Using bluetooth headphones: In some cases it might also work to toggle (press twice) the MIDI input button on the main toolbar or just restart MuseScore.

Shoichi,
Thank you, but I don't use bluetooth headphones. Another user found a solution.

Go to MuseScore->Preferences... and click on the I/O tab. Under "Audio Engine", click the button that says "Restart Audio and MIDI Devices". This will add the option of selecting "External Headphones" from the Device list. But that option will not appear until you close and reopen the Preferences window. So you can press Cancel (because it is faster, and besides, the audio and MIDI devices have already been restarted by now). Reopen the Preferences window, and if necessary, click on the I/O tab again. Now you can choose "External Headphones" from the Device list. Press Ok, and you should be good to go.

Matt,
Thank you very much. This worked for me. I had spent over an hour on an Apple call, and reset my MacBook Pro NVRAM, and these steps hadn't worked. The Apple agent helped me pin down the MuseScore app.
