Entering rests a triplets

• Aug 22, 2020 - 21:57

Hi, I am having difficulty with entering items in a particular bar in a score downloaded from the web. I attach a copy of the section. It is the last bar. I am new to Muesscore, particularly having a problem with the triplet, I want 3 crotchets, I have clicked on the minim note after inserting the triplet sign (ctrl3) but nothing happens. If someone could run through the process for the last bar including the quaver rest it would be greatly appreciated.

Do it the other way round. Click on a minim rest before using CTRL+3.

The idea is that the triplet takes up the full duration of whatever is selected before it is divided into three. So for three minims in the space of a semibreve, select a semibreve rest and use CTRL+3, for three semiquavers in the space of a quaver, select a quaver and use CTRL+3.

The same idea works for other tuplets e.g using CTRL+5 for a quintuplet..

So sorry to be a pain, Steve and Kuitt what you told me works fine when starting with an empty bar but when you have other notation before the triplet it has a mind of its own. I have tried all sorts of permutations but after the first crotchet in the triplet is entered when the second note is inserted it then it puts all sorts of stuff up even rests and notes in the next bar. I attach a picture of one of the results. as you can see the three crotchet triplet is supposed to start after the "F" quaver. Needless to say, this is driving me nuts. Can either of you or both put me out of my misery, please?

Somehow you have shortened the second bar in that picture. If you squint hard enough you can see a pale minus sign above the end of the bar. That indicates that it is an irregular bar that is shorter than the number of beats indicated by the time signature, and if you add up the duration of notes and rests you will see there are only three beats. Possibly you did a CTRL+Delete rather than just a delete. That would remove what was selected - i.e. take a selected note and the time it represents from the bar, whereas delete without CTRL just replaces a selected or chord with silence - i.e. a rest.

How to fix it: right click on the bar and then on bar properties. You should see that the actual duration is not the same as the nominal duration. Just adjust the actual duration to match the nominal duration and you should get that missing beat back. Then what you expect to fit will actually fit.

If you are still having problems attach the .mscz file rather than a picture so that we can find out what is really going on.
