Colour
I'm writing a piece containing many iterations of the same theme with small variations. Is there any way I could use colour to keep track of where I am when I return to edit it? Either different coloured pages, notes or tape along the bottom would help.

You can select pretty much any given element and use the inspector to color it.
You might want to look into https://musescore.org/en/project/add-comments-score which allows you to save a small note for yourself in the score metadata.
You could also add rehearsal marks (which you probably want anyhoow) and use View / Timeline to visualize things beyond that.
