How to change dynamics during timpani trills in one measure

• Oct 17, 2020 - 09:34

I want to make a timpani trill loud, and gets instantly quiet, but those decresndo lines doesnt work, nor even the fp dynamic marking. And also how can I keep the timpani drumroll fast even if its in a slow tempo?

Single note dynamics on a timpani don't work so dynamic changes on a trill is out. As for making a roll notated with a trill sound faster at a slower speed, that's something we can't control.

What does work are tremolos. In the tremolo palette there are tremolos through the stem and tremolos between notes. For the timpani you are only interested in the tremolo through the stem. They come in 8th, 16th, 32nd and 64th notes. If you want to notate with a trill, select it and disable "Play" in the inspector. Add a tremolo through the stem that sounds closest to what you want (this is the only adjustment you can make), select the tremolo and press v to make it invisible. Now the speed is changed and single note dynamics work. I don't think fp will work but it might.

I also put invisible pedal marks under my timpani rolls to smooth out their sound a bit.
