Special Playback for Tam-Tam Glissando

• Nov 25, 2020 - 08:35

I have mentioned something about it before but this time I'm bringing it up as a special playback feature. It's a really special case, so I consider it minor, but would be cool to implement. However, even if it's a really minor detail/feature, I believe it could be applied because the idea is based on things that already exist in Musescore:

So the only sound Tam-Tam has right now is a moment of "DING", yes we'll call it that for now. What my suggestion says, is that when we apply a glissando text to a quarter note, for example, then this "DING" which lasts for a single moment, becomes a "DIIIIIIIIIING" which lasts for a quarter. NO it won't sound sound like a tremolo but a continuous sound, like a string or wind playing a normal quarter note. Similar stuff will apply for every value/duration.

I consider it "relatively" easy because, if I have a good idea of how continuous sounds are reproduced in playback, "continuous" sounds are already a thing in Musescore right? I mean you just put a normal note down, like a half, in a wind/string instrument's part and then it plays a continuus sound for the duration of a half. So I think the same could easily be applied for tamtam glissandos.

The reason I suggested it, is because of The Rite of Spring. If you have heard it you'll know what I mean: there are some parts where you use baguettes (baqettes?) and do a circular movement to make tam-tam reproduce a sound with duration, rather than a moment of sound.

Well if you think it's not a huge hustle then could you consider it? Maybe it's not worth it, I don't know,

I hate to bring up old issues, but like the straight mute, there is no GM standard for including a glissando sound on a tam-tam or any cymbal in the sound font. Yes, MuseScore does have some sounds that are not included in the standard, but most are variations (like expr. or fast/slow) of existing sounds but demand for such sounds has not been high. If one of the sound font developers agreed with you, they might include the sound but in the mean time you'll need to search the web for any non-GM sounds. I have a tam-tam specific sound font on my system and it doesn't include the glissando either.
