bass clef

How do I add the bass clef? Right now I just have the option to work with the treble clef.

I'm guessing you are starting with the same score MuseScore first opens with. You're never limited to that; you're really not expected to use it at all except for just messing around. When creating new scores, you should normally be going to File / New, where you will find all sorts of options for different templates, a full instruments, etc.

Using the new file option, I select electric bass as the instrument, and for signature the only option I am given is treble clef. It would seem the default for all the bass instruments should be bass clef, or that the bass clef should at least be an option.

I don't think it's a treble clef. The defaults on my copy of MuseScore 4.1.1 show:
[CORRECTED LIST]
either Treble clef 8va bassa (for Electric Guitar and Accoustic Guitar)
or Bass clef (for 6-str. Electric Bass, Bass Guitar and Electric Bass)

MuseScore defaults are always set to what is considered the most widely-accepted convention. There is nothing to stop you changing the clef if you want to follow a different rule.

Just for the sake of completeness:
In MuS 3.6.2 there are also guitars without 8va bassa, a "Guitar (treble clef)", an "Acoustic Guitar (treble clef)" and an "Electric Guitar (treble clef)". Maybe more.
To be found under "All Instruments."
I'm not a guitarist, so I don't know why this is. It seems to me that both variants are used.
