Can't add notes in a bar after editing it.

Hi,

when I delete some notes or rests from a bar I have that grey rectangle appearing on the top right and I can't add any other notes in the bar where I would normally have another whole beat to fill in. What does that symbol mean and how can I get rid of that in order to add more notes?
