how do I use midi it won't work for me

MIDI is a file format and/or communication protocol; your question is not specific enough to provide a meaningful answer.

For the communication protocol, see Edit > Preferences > I/O
For the file type, either just File > Open an existing MIDI file or File > Export to export an existing score to a MIDI file.
