Add extra invisible rests to facilitate guitar chords

• Jul 17, 2021 - 20:46

I have a measure with a full rest. I want to keep that rest where it is, in the middle where it should be.

I want to add a series of 8th note rests on voice 2 so I can add guitar chords above the staff in the correct positions.

When I try to do this, everything kind of ends up wonky; the whole note rest gets left justified and I can't manually move it to the middle, etc. I'm sure I'm doing this wrong somehow.

If you can give me a step by step on how to do this it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

And just like that I figured it out.

  1. Click the 'Rest' button
  2. Click on Voice 2
  3. Add the rests to the measure in question
  4. Once you make the rests not visible, the whole note rest on voice 1 will re-adjust itself to where it needs to go.

You don't need invisible rests just to add chords. SImply use the pre-defined shortcuts to advance the cursor after entering a chord symbol - Space to move to next note/rest/beat, semicolon to move by beat, Ctrl+4 to move by eighths, etc. See the Handbook under "Chord symbols" for more info.
