Violin/Viola/Cello/Bass Harmonics, Specifically a Soundfont!

• Jul 23, 2021 - 09:06

I'm really surprised that Musescore has no soundfonts or options for creating harmonics on stringed instruments (other than guitar), especially considering that harmonics are such an important part of both solo and orchestral writing for bowed stringed instruments. It's easy (though a bit tedious) to notate, but I've looked for a long time for some sort of soundfont for harmonics and found absolutely nothing. I would really appreciate the addition of both solo and sectional harmonics for strings to Musescore--it would fill in a big gap in functionality and help composers to envision their music so much better.

In the meantime, though, could anyone suggest a soundfont for this? I'm not willing to use flute or piccolo--harmonics are either played straight or (rarely) with pitch vibrato, not with volume vibrato like wind instruments. Plus, the sound gets lost if I'm using it in an ensemble or orchestral piece.

It's not part of the General MIDI standard we rely on to make scores compatible with a wide variety of soundfonts, that's why it isn't part of the default soundfont. But no doubt non-GM soundfonts exist that contain this, so while waiting for suggestions here, try a web search .
