Select the note or rest and use CTRL+DEL (CMD+DEL on a MAC). See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tools#timewise-delete

Normally, though, there should never beat extra beats, unless you added them manually via the special "insert mode", or joined measures together, etc. So if you don't want extra beats in a measure,e just don't use those special techniques and simply use standard note input methods - the measures will always contain the proper number of beats.
