Playback cursor not synchronised with notes

When playing back any piece of music the playback cursor follows the notes for a few bars (measures) then hesitates and catches up perhaps a bar before repeating the behaviour. It seems to be the fault of the Intel graphics system on my computer, a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop. There is a similar uneven response when typing.
The audio is not a problem for since the notes play in correct tempo. If this poor response of the playback cursor cannot be cured could someone please tell me how to disenable it
