Two questions pertaining to lute tablature.
•How can I add a 7th course? That is, letters below the 6 tab lines.
•How can I change the rhythm signs, i.e. remove the heads? I started with a template I got from a fellow lute player. All the rhythm signs have heads on them. Normally they don't.

Please attach this score to understand exactly what you mean and for better help (and explain better how to reach your goal)

My score has noteheads on the rhythm signs as can be seen in the attachment.

Most Renaissance tab doesn't as can be seen in the second attachment.

The second image you show me is the one made by another program, Fronimo, I guess (and probably by Sarge Gerbode)?
MuseScore can come close, but not automatically (i.e., you have to edit the beaming after the input of your score). See this thread: https://musescore.org/en/node/81051

See the difference:
1. First file (in French Tab, as your images): test French style.mscz
2. In "Dowland" style, after beaming edit: test Dowland style.mscz
Right-click anywhere on the stave to bring up the Stave Properties dialogue box. Under Part Properties, click 'Edit string data' button and add 'New String'. Click 'Apply'. Then, still in the Stave Properties box, click 'Advances style properties'. Here you will find various options for the fret marks and note values. Once you've got it to look as you want, save as a template.

I tried to do what you wrote. I messed up somewhere. I think there was no "Apply" button that I saw, only "OK". One thing was somehow it placed the string between the 1st and 2nd course even though I chose F2 as its pitch.

I tried again, this time making sure the 6th course was selected before adding the string. This seemed to work, but I still can't seem to add a note below the tab staff. You can see the note placer won't go below the G string.

Ah, it works! It works if I select any note, then turn on note entry and then use the arrow key to move down to the 7th course. I can't actually use the cursor to get to the 7th, but the arrow key works.

To get beams without heads: "Right-click anywhere on the stave to bring up the Stave Properties dialogue box. ...click 'Advances style properties... Here you will find various options for the fret marks and note values."
Select the 'Note values' tab and then "Musescore Tab Italian".

Excellent. Not Italian, because I want French Tab, but choosing stems and beams rather than note heads is exactly what I want. This looks very good, to me.
