Labeling of note play timing properties in the Piano Roll Editor

• Sep 10, 2021 - 23:19

In the Piano Roll Editor (PRE), we can inspect and change the two note play timing properties (which I identify as play duration and play start time) In two different ways: (a) with a set of two controls in the control bar at the top of the PRE window and (b) (in a couple of different ways) with the controls and bar graph indicators in the PRE Levels Display areas. The issue is in the labeling of corresponding properties on those two sets of controls.

Play duration
The value that is labeled "Duration" in the PRE control bar controls is labeled "Duration (multiplier)" in the PRE Levels Display areas. The two affect the same property in exactly the same form with the same definition and the same units.

But the value labeled "Duration" in the PRE Levels Display area controls affects that property in a different way, with a different definition and different units.

Play start time
The value that is labeled "OnTime" in the PRE control bar controls is labeled "Position" in the PRE Levels Display area controls. The two affect the same property in exactly the same way, with the same definition and the same units.

I think this set of features may not be helpful to the user.

Best regards,

Doug

My suggestion for sorting this out in the most pragmatic way:

On the controls at the top of the PRE window:
•No change.

On the "Level selector" dropdown at the bottom of the PRE window:
• Change "Position" to "OnTime".
• Change "Duration (multiplier)" to "Duration".
• Change "Duration" to "Dur. (incremental)".

The reason for the abbreviation of the last one is so that we can tell which of the last two is selected in the dropdown window, which (in my installation) can't even show all of "Duration".
