play buttons greyed out

i was trying to make something for my music class, when i noticed that there was no sound when i placed down a note and the play button was greyed out. i have tried factory resetting, resetting the audio and MIDI devices and quitting and reopening musescore. the synthesizer button is also greyed out, and i tried to factory reset it but it's still greyed out. i'm on macos big sur version 11.6 and the musescore version is version 3.6.0.487915347, it said there was an update for musescore but i'm not sure how to update it. this is for an important end-of-year assessment, please help
