Why won't Musescore let me use multiple voices?

• Nov 7, 2021 - 10:17

I am trying to make sheet music from a MIDI. It has a certain part where some notes are played in sequence, while others are held. And I can't make Musescore let me use Voices to make these notes appear nicely notated.

I have attached the mscz file

So what I would like to do here is to avoid using the notation where notes are connected with lines, signifying they should be held for so long, and instead just have the note have a proper duration (using multiple voices).

I have detalied what I want to achieve and what fails in the mscz file itself.

Do you absolutely have to have precise note values and overlapping notes or would an approximation do? If the former, then forget it but if the latter you could use a pedal marking.

Sounds like you're attempting to take a passage that was originally notated one way and turn it into something different. Don't, there is absolutely no way that isn't going to be much less effiicient* than just entering what you want. Look at what's there as a starting point if that helps, then decide for yourself what simplification you want, then simply enter then into an empty measure / staff.

The hard part here is going to be deciding what "nicely notated" means. There is absolutely no way a septuplet involving a mixture of eighths, sixteenths, and thirty-second notes is readable whether one uses ties or multiple voices. Is it at all possible to quantize the MIDI file before importing? If not, you're going to have to decide for yourself how you want to notate this to be readbale, and then enter it.

In particular, moving notes from voice to voice only works if the destination voice has space available, and only if tuplets aren't involved. Lots more complications that really require extremely advanced experience with MsueScore to pull off. Comapred to just entering the music directly, which is *far easier.
