Editing parts globally: text sizes, header format

• Nov 9, 2021 - 05:39

I just today arrayed a new set of parts from my score, but could not change most text sizes using Format>Style>Text Style.

Successful: Title, Subtitle, Composer, Part Name
Unsuccessful: Tempo, Rehearsal Mark, System Text, and other text (they still match Conductor's Score)

Also: Can I change Header layout for parts globally? I edited the header on Trombone 1&2 part, but must I change all 25+ other parts individually?

Style for parts is independent. But that's why there is also an "Apply to all Parts" button, to make a change across the board. That goes for fonts as well as headers. Just make the changes you want in the dialog then hit the button.

Or if you havem't started editing the parts yet, simply make the style changes in the score itself, then delete and regenerate the parts.

You probably also want to turn off the option to show staff names on single staves. It defaults to off but it looks like you turned it on for some reason. it's not relevant in the score, and counterproductive n the parts, so better to leave it off.

Byt also, note that style changes won't affect elements that have been formatted manually. Looks like that was the case for rehearsal marks, the style setting is 14pt but they've been forced to 26pt. MuseScore assumes you meant it when you overrode the style, and preserves that customization even if you change the style. You'll want to select all rehearsal marks and reset to style (clicking the reset buttons in the Inspector), then the style changes will "take".

Thank you very much. I guess I corrupted my score by using "select similar elements" several times. I guess I will have to "reset all styles to default" in the score, and the parts as well, as I made a preliminary attempt to edit one or two of them previously, probably including the header. Isn't there a forgiveness clause for "crimes committed out of ignorance??"

Should I have "Follow staff size" selected on either score or parts?

I haven't found the setting for turning off staff names for single staves? I may have complicated it, though, by adding a singing part to each instrument.

Not "reset all styles to default", unless you really want to undo all your style settings. I just mean, reset the individual rehearsal marks, by selecting them all and hitting the reset buttons in the Inspector as I suggested. That way they reflect the style, but the style is the one you chose, not whatever the default is. then in the future, if you want to change all rehearsal marks, change the style, not the individual rehearsal marks.

Follow staff size should normally be left at its default - most things should scale, and the few that shouldn't (measure numbers and titles, for instance) are already set that way. But actually, in your particular case, because you have reduced the page size so small, you might consider turning that option off for rehearsal marks rather than making the rehearsal marks twice their normal size. Then they'd remain normal size in the parts without needing to apply a second style setting there.

To turn the staff names back off on single staves, see Format / Style / Score, "Hide instrument names if there is only 1 instrument".

And not to worry, all is forgiven, the penance is needing to do some cleanup :-)
