New Laptop - Muse score crashing while idle or in use, headphone jack issues

• Jan 3, 2022 - 23:40

I love musescore, it's getting me through my grad school very well. I recently got a new job and had to turn in my old lenovo laptop. I bought a new laptop, an MSI Pulse GL66 on black friday. It is a massive upgrade from my lenovo in all aspects... besides running musescore.

The first issue I noticed was when I plug in or unplug my headphones while using musescore. If I plug in headphones while the program is running, it wont switch to them and keeps using my laptops speakers. I try going into preferences, I/O settings, and I click restart audio device, but it keeps using my laptop speakers. I have to go into my sound settings and disable my laptop speakers in order for it to switch to them. This problem never occurred while using my lenovo laptop. It would automatically switch when plugging in my headphones and I literally never needed to restart the audio device.

If I boot up musescore on my new laptop while headphones are plugged in, it properly uses my head phones, but if I unplug my headphones while musescore is running it no longer will play back, I have to restart the audio device in the I/O settings in order to get it to play from my speakers.

These issues are annoying, but I was willing to overlook them, however my next issue is making me seriously question my purchase and sanity. Musescore crashes, all the time. It just crashed while I was typing up this post, and it crashed countless times today while using it or while leaving it idle. I open musescore and leave it as it is, and it crashes in anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes, sometimes less. I open musescore and use it, and it crashes, less frequently then while idle, but still regularly. There seems to be no correlation to my headphones or speakers, While using either one it crashes. Additionally, musescore takes over a minute to load. I have 16gb of ram and musescore is installed on a ssd, which are both improvements from my lenovo laptop, yet on my old lenovo laptop it loaded almost instantly, on my new laptop it takes over a minute to load up. How can this be?

I have uninstalled all of the audio devices and drives and reinstalled the latest ones from MSI's website for my laptop and the problem only has gotten progressively worse and more frequent. I really don't know what to do, I thought my new laptop would make things easier, not extremely difficult. Does anyone have any ideas whats going on? When Musescore crashes it offers to send a crash report but it doesnt show me any error codes.

I have an older laptop that that also has playback problems if I unplug the headphones while the program is running. I don't think there is anything to be done for it. Look in Administrative tool/Event Viewer for crash information.
Through a bios and registry hack, I had Windows 11 running for a short time on the above Laptop. MuseScore was a little slow in that situation.
What sound font are you using?
