Measure Numbers - Request Default Setting

Hi - I would like bar numbers displayed on the upper left of each system - which I read in the ops manual was the default setting.

screenshot of my measure number settings window (Format / Style / Measure Numbers) - which appear to be set correctly (albeit greyed out...)

Please advise on how to get the numbers displayed.
