connect notes with beams

I have the Beam Properties open but am not succeeding in connecting notes with beams. In the attached file, I want to connect Voice 1 notes with one beam (underneath the notes) and Voice 2 notes with one beam (above the notes). How do I do this?

Quarter notes don't get beams.

Try using eighth notes in the upper voice.

Also with notes in separate voices you might need to add unisons.

Is this the look you're after? (Note that I switched notes between voice 1 & 2)
