Lute tablature ornaments and symbols

• Feb 9, 2022 - 14:12

Greetings... I'm working with lute tablature in Musescore, and as near as I can tell there is no way to add ornaments and articulations in a way that actually looks like what was used in historical tab. Is the feature hidden somewhere, or just not implemented?

You need to look in the Master Palette: Shift + F9, or highlight a note and press Z. Scroll down to Symbols, then have a look at "French and English Renaissance lute tab", "Italian and Spanish" ditto, and "Other baroque ornaments". "All symbols" may have other useful shapes. Right hand fingering is in "Renaissance lute tab". Create a custom palette for future use.

You'll need to adjust the placing by dragging or with the Inspector, but then "save as style" for each ornament will help to speed up entry. I don't think any of these ornaments will play back - hardly surprising as they often meant different things to different composers.
