how to print a part

• May 6, 2022 - 15:05

I have a score of a violin part with piano accompaniment. I want to print the violin part. The MuseScore
manual says to be sure the part I want to print is active. And to select the part tab if it is not.
I have no idea what "Active" means. I cannot find any kind of "tab". Under File I have gone
to Parts, and under Edit to Instruments. I cannot find any kind of "tab" or any thing that I can select to
just print (or export) just the violin part.

Under Parts I do see under Instruments in Score "voice" and "piano", both grayed out
Under "Select Part" there is nothing there. If select "Single Part" and then click on voice
or type it in, I don't get just the violin part.

Going to Instruments under Edit gets me no where either.

This is a frequent problem. The manual says to do something with no explanation of how you
do that. Not being able to print a part from a score is a significant problem. I have
version 3.6.2.548021803 Revision 3224f34

If you can email any explanation my email address is WendelDRenner@comcast.net

Thank you. That worked. But I think a better description would be to select Parts under File.
Then hit "Select Part", and then click on the part name to high light the part. Then select Export
under File and you can select what to export to export as PDF or MuseScore format.

"Tab" did not mean a thing. "Active" does not mean anything. Does something visually change?

Hitting Single Part just caused the word Part to show up in the Select Part area. I have
no idea what that is or means. If you hit Single Part again it says Part 1 and under it Part 2.
Going to Export you still see Full Score as the only choice. Same if you click on the part
in the "Instruments in Score" box under the "Select Part".

It would be nice if an index were added to the manual.

Go to [File]>Parts.

You will see a button "All Parts". If you press that you will create a part for each instrument. In your case one for violin and one for piano.

Once the parts are created you can select either by clicking on the relevant tab and then print from there. However, I usually use the [File]>[Export] process to create a pdf file either of the score + parts or one for individual parts. It is easier to set up clever printer options - e.g. booklet printing from a pdf viewer like Adobe than doing it using the MuseScore Print dialogue. Also I have the pdf files for future use.

You can also create individual parts that can contain one or more instruments using the "Single Part" button. Only when that is selected do the instruments become "active" so that you can select them and add them to the bottom right hand pane. Using the Single Part button you could create a violin+Piano part containing both instruments. What is the advantage of that over the score? This way you can have a full sized soloist stave in the score and a small soloist stave with a full sized piano grand stave in the part - as you get in most piano accompaniment parts.

See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/parts for more information on how to create parts and come back here if you are still having problems.
