Rest Button
When I press N for note input mode, the rest button becomes grayed out and unusable. I can't figure out how to fix this or work around it to be able to use rest signs.

Press 0 (zero) to enter a rest.

As mentioned, you don't need the rest button to enter rests - just type 0 if using the keyboard, or right-click if using the mouse.
But also, the rest button shouldn't become greyed out while in note input mode. Are you saying if you click it, it doesn't turn on? It's a slow way of entering rests, but it does work: in note input mode, after selecting the duration, click the rest button, then click in the score, then click the rest button to turn it off again.
