Easier way - pre-select a handful of measures, use the Join command under Tools / Measures to create on big measure., Then enter your notes, and when you reach the point where you want a barline, use Split. You can assign shortcuts to these commands (in Edit / Preferences / Shortcuts) making the process extremely efficient.
