number of systems per page

• Sep 3, 2022 - 21:43

In my piano trio, there are four systems of four staves each per page . . . except on one page, where there are only two. There is plenty of room for the third system on that page. How can I make a third system be put onto that one page?

As you haven't provided the score this will be guesswork, but it is possible some element (e.g. a dynamic) has become become greatly displaced from its default position, perhaps by inadvertently dragging it with the mouse. You can put everything back to its default position by selecting everything with CTRL+A and then resetting any changes with CTRL+R.

If that is an incorrect diagnosis please come back and attach the score (.mscz file) so we can investigate further.

Thank you for replying, Steve.

I am afraid to do a CTRL+A as I have the rest of the score the way I want it & would prefer not to have to tweak about all the rest of the pages. Instead, I highlighted just page 24, which is the problem page, & did a CTRL+R, but all it did was to put my expression marks (rit & a tempo) above the staff instead of below. I moved them back where they belong manually.

I have now appended the score. As I said, the problem is page 24. Any ideas?

The main issue I see is that you somehow have some empty staff texts that are forcing some other text higher.
It shouldn't normally be possible to create these empty staff texts, but this is the third report I've seen in the past couple of weeks, so it does happen. To find and delete them, try selecting some other staff tect, then using the Inspector to add a frame around it and then set that as the style with the "S" button. Now you'll see empty frames floating above some measures you can delete. Then reset the staff text style.

It still won't quite be enough because these staves are extra crowded and require more room. You'll need to manually adjust the position of some dynamics or other markings, or flip some from above to below the staff or vice verse, in order to save vertical space and allow the staves to come closer together. Or just shrink the staff size ever so slightly.
